News & Updates

Amazon has named SBI, not HDFC or ICICI, for the sale-day discount

The best credit card for Amazon’s Great Indian Festival 2026 depends on one thing: whether you already hold an SBI card, because SBI is the only bank Amazon has named for the sale-day instant discount. The sale opens to everyone on 8 October, with Prime early access reported from 7 October. Flipkart’s Big Billion Days runs in the same window, so you’ll be told from every direction to “use the best card.” The catch: the best card on Amazon is not the best card on Flipkart, because different banks fund the discount on each platform — and that decides more than any reward rate on the card itself.

What Amazon has said — and what it hasn’t

  • Confirmed: sale opens 8 October; Prime early access from 7 October; 10% instant discount on SBI credit cards, SBI debit cards and eligible SBI card EMI transactions.
  • Not published as of 4 October: the maximum discount per order, the minimum order value (it usually differs for phones), the end date, and which products are excluded.
  • Not named: HDFC, ICICI and Axis as sale-day instant-discount partners. Some roundups list them anyway. We couldn’t match those claims to Amazon’s own announcement, so we’re not repeating them.

Two pots of money again

Same logic as the Flipkart sale. Pot one is the bank’s instant discount at checkout, funded by the bank partner and capped per order. Pot two is whatever your card pays afterwards as cashback or points, with its own cap. The sale decides pot one for you — this year, on Amazon, that’s SBI. Your choice only matters for pot two, and for whether you can use pot one at all.

What a ₹30,000 Amazon cart returns

One cart, ₹30,000, paid in full (no EMI) on an eligible product. The SBI discount is modelled at the full 10%, ₹3,000, which is the ceiling — the real figure is lower if there’s a cap. Card cashback is modelled on the amount billed after the discount, as in our Flipkart piece. Treat these as planning numbers.

Planning numbers, not promises. SBI discount minimums, caps and exclusions are set per product by Amazon and SBI — re-check on the day you buy.

What we assumed for this table
  • One ₹30,000 order on a product eligible for the offer, paid in full — no EMI.
  • SBI instant discount modelled at the full 10% (₹3,000), the ceiling. Amazon hasn’t published the cap or the minimum order, so the real figure may be lower.
  • SBI card earn is calculated on the amount billed after the discount (₹27,000). Amazon Pay ICICI, HDFC Millennia and MoneyBack+ have no announced sale discount, so they earn on the full ₹30,000.
  • Amazon Pay ICICI at the Prime rate of 5%. Without Prime it is 3%, or ₹900.
  • No other spend in the same cycle or month, so no cap is already used: SBI Cashback ₹2,000 per statement cycle, HDFC Millennia ₹1,000 per month shared across its ten merchants, SBI SimplyCLICK 10X on the first ₹10,000 of partner spend a month.
  • Points valued at ₹0.25 each for SimplyCLICK and MoneyBack+. Redeem for less and the number drops.
  • SBI discount and SBI card cashback assumed to stack. Not confirmed by SBI or Amazon.

Check each card’s own terms, caps and last-verified date on its page: SBI Cashback, SBI SimplyCLICK, Amazon Pay ICICI (Prime), HDFC Millennia, HDFC MoneyBack+. How we calculate

The pattern is hard to miss: if the SBI discount lands as announced, it outweighs reward-rate differences on a single cart, and any eligible SBI card gets it. That is a finding about this week’s offer, not about which card is better. Over a year of Amazon shopping, Amazon Pay ICICI’s uncapped 5% and zero fee is the card to keep.

Best credit card for Amazon Great Indian Festival 2026, by cart size

The right pick depends on how big the cart is and which cards you hold. Amazon Pay ICICI’s 5% for Prime members has no cap. SBI Cashback’s 5% online stops at ₹2,000 per statement cycle — and that cap is shared with every other online purchase in the cycle, not just Amazon. Bigger carts and busier months are where ICICI catches up.

Under ~₹40,000SBI Cashback (if you hold it)Roughly the same 5% earn as Amazon Pay ICICI (slightly less, since it is calculated after the discount), plus the SBI instant discount. It wins by about the size of the discount, so any real discount is enough.
Around ₹80,000SBI card — if the discount cap is above ₹2,000SBI Cashback’s earn tops out at ₹2,000; Amazon Pay ICICI keeps going to ₹4,000. The SBI discount has to be bigger than the ₹2,000 gap to win. Amazon hasn’t said whether it is.
Already spent a lot online this cycleCompare the SBI discount alone with ICICI’s 5%SBI Cashback’s ₹2,000 cycle headroom may already be used up, so you’d get the discount but little or no earn on top. On a small cart the discount still wins; on a large one ICICI’s uncapped 5% can.
You only hold HDFCUse it, eyes openNo announced sale discount. Millennia’s ₹1,000/month cap makes it weak on a big haul; MoneyBack+ is steady at roughly 2.5%.
You only hold ICICI Amazon PayUse itUncapped 5% for Prime is real money on a big cart even without a bank discount. Don’t open a new card just to chase a sale.

SBI Cashback — the sale-week pick, if you already hold it

5% on eligible online spends, 1% offline, ₹2,000 per statement cycle on online and ₹4,000 combined. Annual fee ₹999, waived at ₹2 lakh of annual spend. It excludes EMI, wallet loads, fuel, utilities and a long list besides — the exclusions are the part festive forwards skip. The sale discount comes off at checkout and the card’s own cashback is credited later; they should stack, but that is not confirmed yet.

SBI SimplyCLICK — cheaper to hold, thinner earn

₹499 a year, 10X reward points on partner merchants (worth at most roughly 2.5% at ₹0.25 a point) but only on the first ₹10,000 of partner spend a month, and a ₹500 Amazon voucher as a welcome gift. If you already have it, you qualify for the same SBI discount as SBI Cashback — you just earn much less afterwards on a big cart, because the 10X stops at ₹10,000. Amazon Pay ICICI — the year-round Amazon card

5% for Prime members, 3% otherwise, 2% on Amazon Pay partners, 1% elsewhere, lifetime free. The 5% has no cap, which is exactly why it’s the right Amazon card when you shop here all year. What it doesn’t have, as far as Amazon’s announcement goes, is a sale-day instant discount. EMI purchases don’t earn the cashback either.

HDFC Millennia and MoneyBack+

Millennia pays 5% on ten named merchants including Amazon, but under one shared ₹1,000 cashback cap per month — it fills fast on a festive cart. MoneyBack+ is steadier at about 2.5% in CashPoints. Both are fine if HDFC is your bank. Neither is an announced Amazon sale partner this year.

No-cost EMI, gift cards and other ways to lose the cashback

  • Choosing no-cost EMI and expecting the card’s 5% as well. SBI’s sale discount is announced to cover card EMI, but SBI Cashback and Amazon Pay ICICI both exclude EMI from rewards — you keep the discount and lose the earn.
  • Paying with an SBI debit card. It gets the 10% discount, but a debit card earns none of the credit-card cashback.
  • Loading Amazon Pay balance or buying gift cards to “prepay.” Wallet loads are excluded almost everywhere.
  • Missing the minimum order for the bank offer — usually higher for phones — and finding out at the payment screen.
  • Splitting a cart into several orders to dodge a cap before you know whether the cap is per order, per card or per day.

Should you get a new card for this?

Probably not for one cart. If you already hold any SBI credit card, you already have the discount — use it. Applying for SBI Cashback only makes sense if you’ll keep shopping online all year (the ₹999 fee needs the cashback to clear it) and you can wait for the card to arrive, which may be after the best deals are gone. A hard inquiry and a fee for one sale week is how people end up with plastic they don’t use.

Frequently asked questions

When does Amazon Great Indian Festival 2026 start?+

It opens to everyone on 8 October 2026. Prime members are reported to get early access from 7 October. Amazon had not announced an end date at the time of writing.

Which bank cards get the instant discount on Amazon GIF 2026?+

Amazon’s announcement names SBI: 10% instant discount on SBI credit cards, debit cards and eligible EMI transactions. Discount caps and minimum order values weren’t published yet. We haven’t seen HDFC or ICICI named by Amazon for the instant discount this year.

Does the SBI discount stack with SBI Cashback’s 5%?+

Probably, but neither SBI nor Amazon has confirmed it. The instant discount comes off at checkout and the card’s cashback is a separate programme credited later. Neither is unlimited — SBI Cashback’s online cashback stops at ₹2,000 per statement cycle — so check your first statement.

Is Amazon Pay ICICI worth it for the festival?+

As a year-round Amazon card, yes: 5% for Prime with no cap and no annual fee. For sale week specifically, it isn’t an announced instant-discount partner, so an SBI card usually beats it on a single cart unless the SBI discount cap is small or you’ve exhausted SBI Cashback’s cycle cap.

Should I use no-cost EMI on a big purchase?+

It depends on what you value. EMI can still get the SBI discount, but the cashback on SBI Cashback and Amazon Pay ICICI is excluded on EMI transactions. Compare the discount alone against the discount plus cashback on a full payment.

Will the best card on Amazon also be best on Flipkart?+

Usually not. Flipkart’s 2026 sale bank partners are Axis and ICICI, while Amazon has named SBI. See our Flipkart Big Billion Days guide for that side.
