The Real Value of Your Reward Points: What Banks Advertise vs What You Actually Get
HDFC points ≈ ₹0.25 in cash, Scapia ≈ ₹0.20 — interactive 15-card table using CardHungry's reward calculator. See advertised rates vs real effective returns.
Banks sell earn rates
Your bank's app shows 5X rewards, 33% on SmartBuy, or 10% coins. What it rarely spells out: those are earn rates. The rupees that land in your pocket depend on redemption — and caps, exclusions, and monthly limits quietly shrink the number. This guide uses CardHungry's reward calculator on 15 popular Indian cards to show advertised headlines next to real effective returns.
Earn rate ≠ rupee value
Value per point = (rupee benefit you receive) ÷ (points redeemed). If 10,000 points become ₹2,500 statement credit, each point is worth ₹0.25 — not ₹1. Effective return % = (net annual rewards ÷ annual eligible spend) × 100. That is what CardHungry's engine reports as steady NAV on each card page.
- Advertised: bonus category rate or portal multiplier on a thin slice of spend.
- Actual: blended return after caps, exclusions, annual fee, and your redemption path.
- Gap: headline % minus real effective % — often 3–30 percentage points on premium cards.
Three redemption realities (2026)
- Cash / statement credit — simplest; HDFC-style ≈ ₹0.25/point.
- Gift vouchers & catalogue — convenient; often ≈ ₹0.20/point (Scapia coins on vouchers).
- Travel & transfer partners — upside case; ₹0.55–₹1+ per point when used well.

Three real-life patterns
Priya — ₹30K/mo, mostly online
Headline: 5% on online shopping. Reality: monthly caps mean effective return often lands near 2–3% after blending other categories. If she redeems points as statement credit at ₹0.25/pt, a points card rarely beats a clean cashback card unless she hits caps perfectly every month.
Rahul — ₹80K/mo, quarterly flights
Headline: 33% on SmartBuy travel. Reality: portal multipliers apply to capped SmartBuy spend, not rent or utilities. Travel redemption path can lift ₹/point above ₹0.55 — but cash redemption collapses the math to HDFC's ₹0.25 floor.
Neha — ₹15K/mo, wants simplicity
Headline: 10% Scapia coins. Reality: if coins redeem near ₹0.20 on vouchers, effective return is closer to ~2% blended — still fine for a travel-first lifestyle card, but not 10% cash back. Cashback or LTF cards often win for set-and-forget users.
Five rules that protect your points
- Check ₹/point on the confirmation screen before redeeming.
- Match card type to how you'll actually redeem (quiz helps).
- Track monthly caps — advertised rates often apply to the first ₹2K–10K only.
- Set expiry reminders; points die on account closure.
- Compare net annual value, not brochure percentages.

What is 1 HDFC reward point worth in rupees?+
Statement credit is typically about ₹0.25 per point. Travel portal redemptions and transfer partners can be higher; gift vouchers are often lower. Always check your logged-in portal rate before confirming.
What is 1 Scapia coin worth?+
On many voucher redemptions, Scapia coins price near ₹0.20 each. Travel redemptions on Scapia can price closer to ₹1 per coin — the path you pick changes everything.
Why do banks advertise 5X or 33% rewards?+
That is an earn rate on specific categories or portals, sometimes with low monthly caps. Your blended real return after all spend and redemption is almost always lower.
Which redemption gives the best value?+
Frequent flyers benefit most from airline or hotel transfers. For simplicity, statement credit is fine — just know the ₹/point floor (often ₹0.20–₹0.25).
Are reward points better than cashback?+
Only if you will redeem well. Otherwise cashback cards with clear percentages and fewer caps are easier to reason about.
How does CardHungry calculate real effective %?+
We run each card through our Reward Calculation Engine with a moderate spend profile, apply category caps and exclusions, subtract annual fee where relevant, and value points per your redemption path. See our methodology page for details.
Do reward points expire?+
Many Indian issuers expire points after 2–3 years of inactivity or on account closure. Check your card's terms and set a calendar reminder.
Is this tax advice?+
No. Personal redemptions are generally not taxed for individuals, but business use may differ. Consult a CA for business cards.
