UPI or Credit Card for Festive Shopping? What’s Actually Better, and When
UPI wins small buys, a credit card wins big online ones, and one bill flips it all. Real rupee math on a ₹30,000 purchase, plus what to use at each checkout.
UPI loyalists and reward chasers are both half right
UPI people will tell you credit cards are a debt trap. Card people will tell you UPI throws away free money. Both are half right. UPI is better for small buys, a credit card usually saves more on big online ones, and one thing overrides both: whether you pay the full bill on time.
India has already sorted itself this way. In September 2026, UPI handled about 40 payments for every credit card payment, averaging ₹1,220 against ₹3,343 on a card. (UPI’s count includes money sent to friends and family.)
One ₹30,000 purchase, five ways to pay
| How you pay | Final cost | Why |
|---|---|---|
| UPI | ₹30,000 | No cashback, no interest |
| 1% cashback card | ₹29,700 | ₹300 back |
| 5% cashback card | ₹28,500 | ₹1,500 back |
| 5% card + sale offer | ₹27,075 | ₹1,500 off the price, then ₹1,425 back |
| 5% card, bill unpaid | About ₹32,200 | ₹1,500 back, but about ₹3,700 interest over 3 months |
What we assumed
- One online order, with nothing else on the card that month.
- 5% is SBI Cashback’s online rate. HDFC Millennia would stop at ₹1,000 because of its monthly cap.
- ₹1,500 is an example discount. The card then earns 5% on the ₹28,500 billed. Not every offer stacks with card rewards, so check at checkout.
- Interest at 3.5% a month plus 18% GST on ₹30,000, held flat. Real statements differ: interest usually runs from the purchase date, and minimum payments chip away at the balance.
The best case saves ₹2,925 over UPI, and that’s real money. But leave the bill unpaid for three months and the interest wipes out the cashback, leaving you about ₹2,200 worse off than plain UPI.
The interest-free period itself is worth little. Keeping ₹30,000 in a savings account for 40 days earns about ₹100 at 3%. The reward is the point, not the float.
What to use at each checkout
| If you’re buying… | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sweets, flowers, diyas, small local shops | UPI | 1% back on ₹500 is ₹5. Not worth the fuss. |
| Anything at a shop that adds 2% on cards | UPI | A 2% surcharge on a 1% card costs you ₹300 on ₹30,000. |
| An online sale cart with a bank offer | That bank’s credit card, paid in full | This year’s headline offers named cards: SBI on Amazon, Axis and ICICI on Flipkart. UPI wasn’t named. |
| The same cart, but you can’t clear a credit card bill | Debit card if the offer covers it, otherwise UPI | Amazon’s SBI offer covered debit cards too. You keep the discount and skip the debt. |
| A phone, TV or laptop, especially from a seller you don’t know | Credit card | A longer dispute window, and your bank balance isn’t touched on day one. |
| Gold and jewellery | Whichever is cheapest after surcharges | SBI Cashback, Axis ACE and Amazon Pay ICICI all exclude jewellery from rewards, so compare the final price. |
| Anything on EMI | Compare the total first | “No-cost” EMI can still carry a processing fee plus GST, and cards like SBI Cashback pay nothing on EMI. |
What the rewards math misses
- Refunds: UPI isn’t the no-protection option it’s often made out to be. If you paid and got nothing, your bank can raise a chargeback, and the merchant’s bank gets 15 days to respond. Card networks generally allow up to 120 days, though disputes often take 45 to 120 days to settle. Neither guarantees a refund, so report it early.
- Limits: most UPI payments stop at ₹1 lakh a day from one bank account, and your bank’s limit may be lower. Some merchant categories get more.
- Scams: you never need your UPI PIN to receive money. If a “refund” or “prize” asks for it, it’s a scam.
- Credit score: paying a card on time builds your credit history. Paying from your bank account by UPI doesn’t. But ₹30,000 on a ₹50,000 limit is 60% utilisation, so pay it down before the statement date if a loan application is coming.
Can you get both with RuPay credit on UPI?
Partly. A RuPay credit card linked to UPI lets you scan a shop’s QR and pay from your credit line, often with rewards. But SBI Cashback, HDFC Millennia, Axis ACE, Axis Flipkart and Amazon Pay ICICI can’t link, and the cards that can usually pay little or cap it tightly: HDFC Bharat’s 5% bucket stops at ₹150 a month. It’s still a credit card too, so an unpaid bill costs you interest just the same.

Frequently asked questions
Is UPI or a credit card better for Diwali shopping?+
UPI for small local buys. A credit card for big online purchases and sale offers, as long as you pay the full bill. If you might carry a balance, the interest will wipe out the reward.
Do festive bank discounts work on UPI?+
The 2026 headline offers we checked named bank cards: SBI on Amazon, Axis and ICICI on Flipkart. UPI wasn’t named. UPI apps run their own offers, but they tend to be small or first-time only, so check the offer strip before you pay.
Do you earn rewards on UPI?+
Not when you pay from a bank account, apart from the occasional app offer. Only RuPay credit cards linked to UPI earn, and usually at a low or tightly capped rate.
Will I pay a charge on UPI after Diwali?+
The planned charge is on merchants, not customers. Reports put it at 0.4% on payments above ₹2,000 at larger merchants, with small merchants and payments to people exempt. NPCI hasn’t announced the start date yet.
